Ailsa Beaton, director of information at the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), has stepped down.
Beaton is to leave the MPS in mid 2013, having worked as director of information for 12 years.
No details are yet available as to Beaton's next move, but last year she told Computer Weekly she was considering a move to the private sector.
"I would like to go back to the private sector at some point. I think there is a lot I could bring with all my experience," she said.
Beaton said in a statement: "It has been an honour to work for the Met. Whilst I shall miss the dedication and support of those I have had the privilege to work with, it is time for me to move on to new challenges''.
MPS commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe said: "I would like to thank Ailsa for her significant contribution to both the MPS and to policing nationally. I wish her well for the future."
During her time at the force Beaton was responsible for the introduction of mobile technologies; improvements to intelligence systems; the implementation of a ubiquitous ICT infrastructure; the provision of the ICT necessary to deliver an effective policing response during the Olympics, including new capabilities in the field of Geographic Information Systems.
The next big IT challenge at the MPS will be the implementation command and control system, which is currently 30 years old. "I am very much aware that my P45 could be on the line with this. It is important because it is the system that co-ordinates someone calling for help and the police officer turning up," Beaton told Computer Weekly last year.
