Container freight rates for shipping from China to Europe (Far East Westbound) did not meet the target of US$4,000/40ft container that shippers had set for May shipments, a number of European importers note. Instead, shippers actually had to offer reductions in freight rates compared with April's level of US$3,200-3,400/40ft container. Freight rates for May shipments have thus evened out at US$3,000-3,200/40ft container on average. This rate was typically left untouched in June, as well. A small number of European importers also reported rates of US$2,900/40ft container. However, shippers felt that these prices generally reflected spot offers available at short notice rather than contract prices.
