NHTSA Warns Consumers Over The Use of Counterfeit Airbags Installed in The Last Three Year

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has warned consumers over the use of counterfeit airbags installed in the last three years other than an authorized dealer following the reports of their malfunctioning.

According to tests performed by NHTSA, many of the counterfeit airbags have been faulty and may lead to non-deployment when being executed during necessary situations.

Global Automakers president and CEO Mike Stanton said counterfeit replacement airbags are a serious safety problem.

"Only original equipment replacement airbags should be used in a repair to ensure that the vehicle performs as designed in the event of a crash," Stanton said.

"While NHTSA thinks this is limited to a small number of vehicles, it is important that consumers verify that their vehicles have original equipment replacement airbags."

Vehicles manufactured by US carmaker General Motors including 2010-2011 built LaCrosse, 2011-2012 Cruze, 2006-2010 Aveo, 2011-2012 Volt and 2012 Camaro are expected to be at risk.
