US carmaker Ford is recalling 2013 Ford Escape models powered by 1.6-litre engines due to engine compartment fuel line, which could split and leak fuel, causing an underhood fire.

According to the carmaker, about 11,500 units of the Escape produced through 11 July 2012 are affected by the recall in North America, mainly in the US.

Ford Automotive Safety Office assistant director Ray Nevi said the company has identified an issue and is taking quick actions in the best interest of its customers.

"Our intensive investigation and testing has identified the area of concern and we are moving as quickly as possible to repair vehicles for our customers," Nevi said.

"In the meantime, it is extremely important that affected customers not ignore this recall and immediately contact their dealer."

According to the company, the Escape models powered by the 2.0 litre and the 2.5 litre engines are unaffected by the recall.

Ford said that its dealers would not deliver or perform demonstration drives of the 2013 Escape vehicles powered by 1.6-litre engines until the issue gets resolved.
