China Plans to Release National Standards That LED Lighting Products Must Follow in 2014

The China government, in view of fast growing demand for LED lighting in the country, plans to release national standards that LED lighting products must follow in 2014, according to Taiwan-based LED makers.

IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) LED lighting standards adopted in Europe and North America are not compulsory specifications in China, raising concerns about safety and quality of LED lighting products sold in the country, the sources indicated.

China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine is drawing up regulations on technical specifications for LED lighting, which will classifiy performance and safety in four grades for all LED lighting products, the sources said, adding that residential products must comply with Grade 0 and 1 standards.

Taiwan-based LED chip packaging houses or LED lighting makers, including Everlight Electronics, Lite-On Technology, Delta Electronics and Edison Opto, are expected to benefit from China's release of such standards, which will enhance their competitiveness in China in terms of product quality and performance-cost, the sources noted.

Demand for LED lighting in the China market in 2013 is estimated at CNY32.4 billion (US$5.3 billion), hiking by 36% on year, the sources noted.
