France-based packaging equipment manufacturer Sidel has partnered with Brazilian oil producer Algar Agro to develop the world's lightest 900ml PET bottle for edible oil .
The partners redesigned and developed the new PET bottle and reduced its total weight from 18 to 14 grams, representing 22% decrease.
Sidel said that the lightweighting of the bottle has reduced the cost of production, packaging and transportation of the finished article while lowering the total cost of ownership of the production equipment.
Algar Agro project manager Edney Valente Lima Filho said: "We put together the best industry suppliers and this is reflected in the project results.
"The success of Sidel was assured by the know-how demonstrated during the negotiation to propose and ensure the new bottle for vegetable oil - the lightest in the world."
Sidel also conducted feasibility tests for the new bottle design at its Packaging & Tooling Centre in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Algar Agro acquired and installed two Sidel Matrix blowers, one at each of its production plants in bottling lines producing 25,000 PET?bottles of vegetable oil per hour.
The installation follows completion of two year investigation and feasibility study into the integration process for the production and packaging of vegetable oils.
The Sidel Matrix blower is a modular blow moulding system designed to fast changeover times and lower environmental footprint. It has up to 200 possible configurations allowing producers the flexibility to pick required size and shape.
Recently, Lithuanian bottler Bir?tono Mineraliniai Vandenys (BMV) said it has achieved 30% in lightweighting of the bottles using Sidel's two new complete line solutions, in less than two years.
