British packaging films printer and converter TCL Packaging has developed new ovenable packaging films for Tesco's food product range.

The new micro-perforated printed films allow gas transmission, thus permitting steam to escape during cooking. However, the apertures are small enough to protect the hot contents and keep them fresh for longer, the company said.

The anti-mist coating on the films minimizes condensation from products with higher moisture content.

Commenting on the development, TCL Packaging managing director Mike Golding said: "What look like simple ovenable films have taken years to be perfected and rigorously tested for performance and food safety.

"It's not just the behaviour of the inks and substrate material together at high temperatures that matters; the laser micro perforations and the anti-mist coating both had to be verified and approved. We believe we are the first manufacturer to have achieved full certification for this type of advanced ovenable film"

Tesco selected TCL's films following rigorous testing process with Smithers PIRA. The films enable pre-packed product to be delivered ready to cook in-store.

The grocery retailer will use the ovenable films to pack its bake-in-store products, hot sandwiches and snacks.

TCL has recently developed micro-perforated printed lidding films to create optimum conditions for soft fruit.

The films have been designed to allow particular gas and moisture transmission rates, effective tray sealing and maximum protection from contaminants for the contents as it is a frequent issue faced by fruit with standard hole-punched lidding films.

TCL's production facilities in Telford are equipped with high tech equipment to perform lamination, lacquering, anti mist coatings, micro perforation, slitting and High Definition flexographic printing.

The company is claimed to reduce packaging, minimize waste and use degradable materials wherever possible. Its supplies films for all types of food and non-food applications.
