According to the statistics released by the US International Trade Commission (US ITC), in the first half of the current year the US exported 9.75 million mt of steel scrap, falling 3.85 percent compared to the first half of 2012. In June this year, US scrap exports amounted to 1.4 million metric tons, falling by 34.5 percent from the previous month and down 9.5 percent year on year.
In the first half of this year, US scrap exports to Turkey amounted to 2.7 million metric tons, up 0.9 percent year on year. Taiwan followed Turkey in the period in question, importing 1.6 million mt of scrap from the US, decreasing by 10.3 percent year on year. Meanwhile, South Korea's scrap imports from the US in the first half amounted to 1 million mt, down 37.7 percent from the first half of 2012. Malaysia, Peru, Vietnam, Italy and Indonesia were among the countries which saw year-on-year increases in their scrap imports from the US in the given period.
