US-based food company General Mills is voluntarily recalling single-serve reduced-sugar Cinnamon Toast Crunch bowlpaks sold in foodservice establishments over Salmonella contamination risk.
The company said that it initiated the recall after it was notified by an ingredient supplier that it had recalled an ingredient due to the possible presence of salmonella. No illnesses have been associated with this finding.
This recall affects approximately 168 cases of product. It includes single-serve reduced-sugar Cinnamon Toast Crunch bowlpaks bearing the following 'Better if Used By' dates: 31AUG2013 and 02SEP2013.
Foodservice operators or consumers who have this product are urged to dispose of the product and contact General Mills for a replacement.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and/or abdominal pain.
This recall has been classified as Class I, which indicates a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.
General Mills, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, operates in more than 100 countries. Its brands include Cheerios, Fiber One, Haagen-Dazs, Nature Valley, Yoplait, Betty Crocker, and Pillsbury, among others.
