Cardia Bioplastics and Alto Packaging have teamed up to produce packaging technology manufactured with Cardia’s thermoplastic starch resins. The resins, which are compatible with existing plastic recycle processes would be food safe compliant.
According to the Australia-based sustainable resins supplier Cardia, the renewable Biohybrid resins are derived from corn crop grown for industrial use. The new packaging will initially focus on fresh food packaging and will be manufactured with Cardia's bioplastic resins, which lower carbon footprint compared to conventional resins.
Combining renewable thermoplastics with oil-based polymer material, the Cardia's resins reduce dependence on limited oil resources and also reduce carbon footprint.
Cardia Bioplastics managing director Dr Frank Glatz said the development of packaging solutions with improved environmental properties through the use of renewable components is significant for the packaging industry to consider.
"By incorporating our thermoplastic starch resins into their packaging systems, Alto Packaging is taking significant steps to reduce the environmental footprint of their packaging products," Glatz added.
Rigid plastic packaging company Alto Food Packaging, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Pact Group and has eight plants in New Zealand and four plants in Australia.
