Series of Packaging Improvements Will Be Launched by Subway

The Subway brand is set to unveil a series of improvements to the sustainability of its packaging as well as operational procedures.

The brand will serve its hot drinks to eat-in or take-away in double-wall sustainable cup, which is made with recycled content and is expected to save 30t of pulp annually throughout Europe.

Subway's biodegradable Sub Wrap, which is used to serve breakfast, is made from 30 - 40% recycled material using paraffin-based wax, printed with water-based inks.

By launching Sub Wrap, the brand made improvements to the breakfast packaging with a reduction in sugar stick size from 97-82mm bringing up to a 15% reduction in paper.

The Sub Wrap is expected to save 12,000m2 of paper throughout Europe per year.

The brand, in a bid to reduce the waste stream, encourages franchisees to use a reusable basket that reduces Sub Wrap usage by up to 20 - 30% in stores.

In April 2013, Subway had signed the WRAP Hospitality and food service agreement to mitigate food and related packaging waste and increase recycling.

WRAP CEO Liz Goodwin said the major challenge for hospitality and food service sector is to handle the vast amount of food and packaging waste it produces and disposes of to landfill annually.

"The joint agreement between WRAP, all four UK governments and industry will tackle this issue, and by working together we can reduce the environmental impact from waste produced by the Hospitality and Food Service sector, whilst reaping the financial benefits," Goodwin said.
