EC Will Extend Safety Net Measures for Dairy, Fruit and Vegetables to Support Farmers

The European Commission will extend safety net measures for the dairy, fruit and vegetables sectors till next year to support farmers most affected by the Russian ban.

The ban by Russia on agricultural imports including fruit, vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, milk and dairy from Europe has been in place since 2014, reported EurActiv.

These potential measures are expected to be effective for fruits and vegetables sector as of next week, and for the dairy sector from 1 October.

European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Phil Hogan said: "The significant actions taken to date by the European Union have demonstrated the solidarity of the EU with farmers most affected by the Russian ban.

"These actions also played an important part in mitigating the effects of the ban. Now, almost a year later, with the ban prolonged, we need to continue to provide a safety net in order to give security to producers who continue to face difficulties in relation to the ban."

The measures, which are currently in place for the dairy sector including public buying-in intervention and private storage aid for both butter and skimmed milk powder, will end on 30 September without an extension.

However, to allow for continued operations of dairy products, intervention will be extended from 1 October till 29 February this year, the EC said.

The measures for fruits and vegetables market, covering the main groups including peaches and nectarines affected by the Russia ban, will be extended till 30 June 2016.

The measures include withdrawal of produce for free distribution of fruit and vegetables to charitable organizations as well as the non-harvesting and green harvesting measures. Additional measures include withdrawals of products for other purposes such as animal feed, composting and distillation.
