LED Lighting Projects in Greater China Is Likely to Benefit LED Chipmaker Epistar

The growing number of LED lighting projects in Greater China is likely to benefit LED chipmaker Epistar as the firm may become the main supplier of LED chips, according to industry sources. There are several projects that are on-going such as the LED lighting demonstration project in Xiamen and Guangzhou. The LED street lamp project in Xiamen has been divided into two phases. The project will install around 1,000 lights with procurement around NT$100 million (US$3.3 million). Taiwan and China each have four LED firms chosen for the project. The first phase of installing 413 LED street lamps has been completed and the second phase is likely to be completed by first half of 2012. The project in Guangzhou is to replace the lightings in the subway system. So far, there are five LED firms from Taiwan that have obtained permission to participate. The installations will begin in first-quarter 2012. The total budget for this project is around NT$200 million, replacing up to 50,000 units of lightings. Source: www.digitimes.com
