Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Touted as The First Euro 6 Compliancy Will on Sale Across Europe

The new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, set to go on sale across Europe in the coming months, is being touted as the world’s first van to meet future Euro 6 emissions standards across its engine range.

The world first Euro 6 compliancy claim from the German carmaker comes along with the new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter’s refreshed look, five new safety systems and a claimed fuel consumption figure as low as 5.3 litres per 100km.

Mercedes-Benz says through the use of its BlueTEC engine and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology, along with AdBlue solution treating exhaust gases, emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate mass and total hydrocarbons (THC) are all reduced.

The Sprinter’s Euro 6 compliant engine line-up spans four- and six-cylinder diesel units ranging in outputs from 70kW to 140kW, and a 115kW supercharged 1.8-litre four-cylinder direct injection engine that runs on natural gas. Transmissions include a six-speed manual and seven-speed 7G-Tronic Plus automatic with lock-up clutch – aimed at improving gear change efficiency by maintaining a fixed connection between transmission and drive shaft when possible.

The new Sprinter has had its chassis lowered to improve drag, fuel consumption and cargo loading and unloading while a new face, in keeping with the updated look of Mercedes-Benz’s passenger cars, sees a more vertical radiator grille, angular and segmented headlight assemblies, a higher bonnet and restyled bumpers.

Inside receives new upholstery and seat coverings, a thicker steering wheel and a redesigned gearshift lever.

Five new safety systems –introduced earlier this month – also make their debut in the Sprinter and include Crosswind Assist, Collision Prevention Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Highbeam Assist and Lane Keeping Assist.

The new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter goes on sale in Europe in June ahead of the van’s local launch in the fourth quarter of 2013.

While Mercedes-Benz Australia says the new safety technology will be available, only Euro 5 compliant engines will be offered. Full pricing and specifications will be announced closer to the launch.

Under Australian legalisation, all brand new models launched from July 1, 2017 will have to meet the stricter Euro 6 emissions standards.
