The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) filed a lawsuit against three companies reportedly involved in the former Everglade Iron and Steel Company site in Hempfield, according to a report by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Tuesday.
The complaint filed with the US District Court in Pittsburg stated that the 16-acre site was "was used as a layover point, or transfer station, for various scrap."? The DEP found hazardous waste that had been or might be released from the site, and after spending $2.3 million on cleanup, the state faces potential further costs.
The lawsuit names CBS Corp., TDY Industries and The Timken Co. as responsible for the site, and therefore for the costs of cleaning it up.
