Ongoing investment in high-tech production equipment, staff and in-house design and innovation have helped boost performance, said the company, which has also beefed up environmental standards.

The 14,000m2 plant in Durham, the company's first in the UK, was firmly on track to hit its annual output target for CPET ready meal trays, said the company.

The site has also started to make containers from high-clarity APET and PP materials for cold foods and snacks including bakery, dairy, fruit, vegetables and cold meats.

Management have added a further 10 thermoforming machines to make 18, with another three due to be commissioned by the end of 2013. Cutting-edge robot packing lines have also been installed.

The UK operation's managing director, Joe Iannidinardo, said: "Our original objective was to install 15 thermoformers. There will eventually be around six robot packing lines.

"This will keep keep man hours low and further boost production output. Robot packing is becoming common in our sites in Denmark, Czech Republic as well as the UK."

He said: "The main reason for growth is efficiency and in the coming months we will fill production holes with more thermoforming machines. We have space for 30."

The company's workforce has already nearly doubled to 60 since the facility opened, but eventually the plant will provide up to 150 permanent jobs. F?rch Plast employs 500 people across all three of its factories.

"The plant has given Faerch Plast major competitive edge. Our UK customers have been keen to visit and are reassured by the benefits offered by local supply, such as enhanced lead times."

The company has also acquired a plot adjacent to the factory and has 30,000 square metres of industrial land to enable it to expand as demand increases.
