Sales of electric cars in the UK are expected to rise from 3,000 to 6,000 in 2013, according to a report from Next Green Car.
The report said that the focus will be less on electric cars and plug-in hybrids, as new low emission petrol and diesel models will also be introduced in 2013.
Volkswagen will introduce an electric version of the Up! city car in 2013 which features a 18.7 kWh lithium ion battery offering about 90 miles range.
Apart from Volkswagen, Ford Fiesta will launch a a new frugal three-cylinder 1.0-litre Ecoboost petrol engine.
According to Next Green Car, Ford's new engine delivers performance to rival a traditional 1.6-litre engine with improved fuel efficiency and ultra-low CO2 emissions.
Next Green Car managing editor Ben Lane said: "Not only are more high quality fully electric models about to be launched in the UK, new plug-in hybrid models will also start to challenge the petrol and diesel regime, offering as they do the ultimate combination of conventional and electric drive-trains."
"However, manufacturers are continuing to bring down the emissions of conventional cars, meaning improved fuel economy and lower cost driving," Lane said.
"If you can live with a city car, supermini, or small family car, there's plenty of choice in the sub-100 gCO2/km range meaning zero car tax as well as high MPG."
