AGI reported that Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco head of the Italian Episcopal Conference and Archbishop of Genoa, has spoken of the troubled Ilva steel plant in Taranto on the eve of a meeting due to take place between the company, the government and trade unions in Rome.

He said that "Not only do we hope that this difficult situation may be resolved, but we also hope to see general good sense prevail. Fair action must be taken so that, with due time and resources, the health of all can be guaranteed and thousands of families can keep their jobs. I am convinced that this will be possible, because it is a problem that is too serious to be ignored. Action must be taken quickly."
