According to local reports, US Steel won't sell any of its unused port lands in Hamilton, Ontario to potential competitors, but it will consider proposals from the city.
The 3.28-square-kilometer property became available in late 2013 after the company permanently shuttered steelmaking operations at the site.
The Hamilton Port Authority has officially expressed interest in buying parts of the property, but US Steel has not publicly commented on whether, or how much, land is actually available.
Steelworker union officials reported that large portions of the property were already dormant before the shutdown, and the City of Hamilton is taking a closer look at unused port lands as it prepares an 18-month study on a bayfront industrial strategy.
