There is room for Foxconn to cooperate with Sharp in solar, say Taiwan makers Nuying Huang,Taipei;Jackie Chang,DIGITIMES[Tuesday 15 May 2012]Industry sources in Taiwan have noted that that there is a chance for Foxconn and Sharp, who have announced plans to cooperate on the production of TVs and panels,to work together on solar products as well. The two firms may begin cooperation with mono-crystalline N-type high-efficiency solar products.
Sharp is the largest solar firm in Japan and has been strong in manufacturing mainstream polysilicon solar cells, modules and PV systems. The firm has also been investing heavily into the development of thin-film solar products.Industry sources added that Sharp has been one of the iconic firms with strong interdigitated back-contact(IBC)technology for making mono-crystalline N-type high-efficiency solar products. If the two giants cooperate on developing such products,it may bring another wave of turbulence for the global industry.
US-based SunPower has been the dominant player in IBC technology, added industry sources.
Meanwhile,Foxconn has announced plans to cooperate with China-based GCL-Poly to build a solar power plant in Shanxi. The two firms reportedly ran into disagreements at end of 2011 but GCL-Poly claimed the cooperation is still on-going.
Foxconn stated the firm does not rule out any type of cooperation with Sharp.
