Lin Predicts Global Demand for Solar in 2012 to Grow by 20%

Global solar demand in 2012 to grow by 20%,says NSP chairman Nuying Huang,Hsinchu;Jackie Chang,DIGITIMES[Wednesday 20 June 2012]Quincy Lin,chairman of Taiwan-based solar cell maker Neo Solar Power(NSP),has noted that the firm's solar cell capacity is full and orders for the third quarter have exceeded orders in the second.Lin predicts global demand for solar in 2012 to grow by 20%.

NSP's solar PV system subsidiary,General Energy Solutions, plans to increase capital from NT$530 million(US$17.74 million)to NT$950 million. The firm hopes to attract financial strategic alliances to develop the solar PV system market. The market currently has an internal rate of return(IRR)up to double digits.

NSP has annual solar cell capacity of 1.3GW and has been operating at full capacity, said Lin.Nevertheless, market conditions in the third quarter will depend on policy changes in countries like Germany and Italy.Orders from emerging solar markets such as the US,China,Japan, and India have been growing.Lin added that orders from Japan and the US account one-third of total orders.

Lin said the firm continues to aim to reach breakeven in 2012.The firm's total shipments of solar cells in 2012 are expected to show a growth rate of 20%,added Lin.

According to Sam Hong,COO of NSP,China-based solar firms have been eager to cooperate with Taiwan-based peers because of the anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties announced by the US.This can also help the oversupply problems in China's solar industry.Despite the fact that China-based firms have been refusing to accept price increases from Taiwan-based peers, both parties do have a consensus to allow solar cell prices to return to a reasonable level, said Hong.

As for the booming Japan market,Lin added that NSP's solar modules and cells have received certification, hence the firm will cooperate with local supply chains to develop Japan's solar market.
