FSANZ Is Calling for Submissions on an Application to Change The Food Standards Code

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is calling for submissions on an application to change the Food Standards Code to permit food derived from a genetically modified soybean.

FSANZ chief executive officer Steve McCutcheon said the application, submitted by Dow AgroSciences and MS Technologies, sought permission to allow food derived from a soybean genetically modified to be tolerant to three herbicides.

"This soybean line is tolerant to 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), glufosinate ammonium and glyphosate," Mr McCutcheon said.

FSANZ noted that its safety assessment has found there are no public health or safety concerns and food from this soybean line is as safe for human consumption as food derived from conventional soybean. FSANZ is seeking comments from government agencies, public health professionals, industry and the community.

The closing date for submissions is 6 December 2012.
