Promotes The Collaboration in Glass and Ceramic Sectors

With the objective of promoting the rehabilitation project of the Iraqi Ramadi state company for glass and ceramic production, which has slowed down due to the conflict that has affected the country, an Iraqi entrepreneurial delegation is in Italy to participate in the study tour organized by UNIDO in glass and pottery sectors.

The initiative is supported by GIMAV (the Italian Providers Association of Machineries, Accessories and Special Products for glass processing) and ACIMAC (the Italian Manufactures Association of Machineries and Equipments for Ceramics). In this context, the delegates have the chance to present industrial partnership and technology transfer opportunities offered by Iraq in these sectors.

During the first stage of the study tour, at GIMAV premises in Milan, different technologies for glass production were presented to the Iraqi representatives, supporting them in understanding which one is the most suitable to Iraqi needs. After that, there was a visit to a glass production plant for pharmaceutical use.

Afterwards, the Iraqi delegation will visit ACIMAC premises, in Modena, where the association will illustrate different kinds of machineries for pottery production. After this session, the delegates will visit some companies of the

industrial cluster: this is an important district developed both in a vertical and horizontal way in the whole value chain. In particular, in addition to ceramic companies, there is also a concentration of excellences in the mechanical-ceramic sector and in activities linked to tiles design and decoration, product packaging and distribution. This enterprises have therefore developed a common strategy environmental protection, paying particular attention to innovation and professional skills development processes.

Finally, the Iraqi representatives will reach Rome for an ad hoc meeting with an Italian company specialized in architectural glass production.

The initiative takes place in the framework of the UN Iraq Development Project and, more specifically, of the UNIDO Private Sector Development Programme. This programme, created and developed in collaboration with Iraqi and international stakeholders, aims at setting up a complete and effective context for the development of the Iraqi private sector. The final purpose of the project is to complete the ongoing modernization process so that the local industry can compete on a global scale, promoting a legal and normative environment able to foster direct investments and supporting the adoption of inclusive and eco-friendly policies.
