The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has recalled uncooked stuffed chicken products of No Name and Barber Foods brands from the marketplace due to possible salmonella contamination.
Driven by a recall in another country, the recall extends to distributors, retailers, and food service establishments such as hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals and nursing homes.
The products include No Names' uncooked chicken parmesan stuffed breaded chicken breast cutlettes, uncooked chicken parmesan stuffed breaded chicken breast cutlettes, and uncooked broccoli & cheese stuffed breaded chicken breast cutlettes.
Barber Foods' products to have been recalled include Cordon Swiss raw stuffed chicken breasts and stuffed breasts of chicken, as well as broccoli & cheese raw stuffed chicken breasts, stuffed breaded chicken breast cutlettes/uncooked, and à La Kiev- chicken breasts.
The agency is conducting a food safety investigation that may lead to the recall of other products.
The CFIA is also verifying that industry is removing recalled products from the marketplace, but notes that the consumption of these products did not lead to any reported illnesses in Canada.
Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make consumers sick, with young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems likely to contract serious and sometimes deadly infections.
Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhoea, with severe arthritis among long-term complications.
