Painting a room is not the most interesting way to spend a Saturday afternoon.In fact,it's easy to get bored:for those who don't resort to getting delirious on paint fumes,there's always the time honoured tradition of daubing crude renderings on your freshly plastered walls and then covering them up again with paint.
But whether you realise it or not,embarking on DIY projects around the home is actually a great way to express creativity,according to Wickes'expert tradesman and nail-hammering guru Paul Minderides.
"I like DIY because it gives people a chance to be creative within their own homes and,in some instances,get their hands dirty where they don't usually,"says the expert."So then to incorporate some artistic venture within that,it is fantastic to hear that people are doing that."
And that means,according to the expert,getting a little messy.
"If we take painting as an example,if you really cover up well-so cover your carpets,and move your furniture from the room,then you can have a lot more fun painting."
But it's not all throwing paint around and having just a crazy old time.According to the latest Lloyds TSB Home Maintenance survey,2011 saw a decline in household spending on the DIY basics.
Expenditure dipped by 19 per cent on essentials such as tools,while paints and other materials also saw a spending shortfall of 16 per cent.And more householders turned away from tradespeople,too,spending ten per cent less overall on their services,instead opting to renovate their homes without help.
However,that doesn't mean you can't get creative around the house.Even if you're no mural painter,adding flourishes to your rooms-such as creative modern ceiling lights or a feature rug-can really lift your living space.
"I really think it is really great that people are trying to get creative and put a twist into a normal DIY job,"said Mr Minderides.
