Stryker and Johnson & Johnson Score Well in Online Rankings

When it comes to best places to work in the medical device industry, Stryker and Johnson & Johnson score well in online rankings. But are there even better medical device workplaces lurking out there?

Stryker was the top pure-play medtech firm listed in a Fortune roundup of 100 companies that were deemed to be the most employer-friendly in the United States. The company came in at number 61 overall, after having ranked 80 in last year's roundup.

A number of companies with some involvement in the medical device industry made the Fortune list, including W. L. Gore & Associates (coming in at 21 in the list), which makes surgical fabrics, vascular grafts, and interventional devices. Gore, however, is a rather diversified company, making products for applications ranging from textiles to chemical processing.

Over on career site Glassdoor.com, Johnson & Johnson has the highest rating among medical device companies. With an average score of 3.5 out of 5, the company is praised for having a friendly work atmosphere and an effective CEO in Alex Gorsky. In all, 88% of the reviewers approve of Gorsky's leadership. The company's Ethicon division has a separate division with a slightly higher ranking of 3.6 out of 5.

With an average Glassdoor ranking of 3.4 out of 5, Medtronic is not far behind on J&J. About 83% of reviewers approve of the company's CEO Omar Ishrak. The company offers competitive pay and rewards hard work, according to reviewers. More negative reviews, however, fault the company's cost containment efforts and slowness in adapting to changing market demands.

Stryker also has a ranking of 3.4 on the site and is praised by many reviewers for its supportive culture.

In any case, the medical device firm rankings on Glassdoor are fairly narrow, only including a handful of companies. So we invite you to weigh in: If you love your employer, feel free to nominate them for the Employer of the Year designation in the Golden Mousetrap Awards. (Note: There is a cost to enter, and employers from a variety of industries are eligible.)

In a separate poll, the editors at Qmed also invite you to informally nominate your employer as the best to work for. There's no cost to participate in the latter survey, which is limited to medical device firms. We'll share the results with you next week.

In any event, we encourage you to check out the prestigious Golden Mousetrap Awards, which reward the achievements of the innovators of the U.S. manufacturing and design sectors.

The Golden Mousetrap Awards are dedicated to rewarding the achievements of innovators in the U.S. manufacturing and design industries. The awards will be presented at Anaheim Convention Center in February, in conjunction with the colocated events: MD&M West, Pacific Design & Manufacturing, WestPack, PLASTEC West, Electronics West, ATX West, and Aerocon.
