In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy,eight million people were without power at one time.

Pepco,which serves the Washington D.C.area,has been using smart meters to locate which power networks went down.The meters automatically send the company a"no power"signal.

Pepco doesn't have to send out crews to check that power's restored;instead,it pings the meters to check they're back up and running.

Following Hurricane Irene last year,Pepco also found that smart meters helped it to speed up power restorations.
