A Mini hybrid is a production possibility and insiders have revealed such a model would be of interest for the local market.
Speaking at the recent launch of the Paceman and Countryman JCW models, a Mini source said a hybrid powertrain similar to that seen in the plug-in hybrid BMW Concept Active Tourer?(pictured below) and BMW Concept Active Tourer Outdoor could find its way into a Mini.
"It's really early days but I guess it's conceivable, it's possible," the source said.
"We're always interested in what is going and different powertrains are very interesting.
"Obviously there's a huge emphasis and push and interest from both BMW and Mini at the moment regarding low-emission vehicles."
When asked if the local arm would be keen on having a hybrid Mini in local showrooms, the source said, "It's possible, if one were to become available we would be interested."
The BMW unit used in both concepts comprises a transversely mounted turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery for 140kW-plus and an all-electric range of up to 30km.
The all-new Mini Cooper –?snapped by CarAdvice's?spy photographers earlier this month?–?has been confirmed for an LA motor show reveal in November, with the 2014 model expected to share a range of 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol and diesel engines with its German owner.
