Leaps and bounds have been made in LED lighting technology in recent years, with the long-life bulbs running up to 25,000 hours over the duration of their lifetime - around 15 years with normal householder use - and being more energy efficient than ever.
But as well as being more energy efficient, easier to recycle and being more of a long-term investment than traditional bulbs, the evolving technology behind such features as LED bathroom light fittings is marking another change in householder habits: more and more homeowners are fitting their lighting as a substitute for art.
That's according to Rebecca Weir, who noted that colourful displays and inventive installation can spark a bathroom or playroom into life.
"With the introduction of LEDs, colour has become more and more popular," she says. "It is easy to control through technology, from wireless remote controls to complicated DMX programmes.
"Colour is often introduced as a fun element in children's bedrooms and bathrooms, however, clients have become quite brave and now use coloured light as a substitute for art."
And that means that as well as investing in illuminated mirror lights or wall-mounted fixtures, homeowners need to think about their lighting control set-up as well.
In addition to dictating the appearance of your lighting display, controls - ranging from simple dimmer switches to advanced, iPad operated programmes - can help howeowners precisely tweak their lighting requirements and control the energy used around their home.
And lighting systems can even be put in place to control your lighting while you are away, to fool potential thieves into thinking people are at home or regulating lighting needed to grow plants.
"With only one per cent of buildings using controls, this is often one of the most overlooked, yet most effective, technologies in saving energy through lighting," said Philip Lighting North America's senior lighting communications manager Silvie Casanova.
