Volkswagen to Recall 323, 700 Diesel Cars in India

After California and South Korea, Volkswagen has been asked recall 323,700 diesel cars in India which exceeded local pollution limits.

The company will have to recall cars belonging to its own brand along with Skoda and Audi brands across the country that are equipped with EA 189 engines.

Volkswagen was asked to take the step after a government investigation found the fault in the cars featuring EA 189 engines.

Last month, the South Korean ministry found that emissions from Tiguan diesel vehicles featuring EA189 engines breached the country's emission standards when the car was not under the usual test conditions.

Earlier, California Air Resources Board (CARB) has ordered Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen to recall and repair 15,000 vehicles featuring 3.0-liter diesel engines sold in the state since 2009.

The findings come after the automaker admitted of cheating US diesel emissions tests by using software.

The company was then asked to recall around 11 million vehicles worldwide could be affected.

The emission scandal has taken a toll on Volkswagen, which previously said will cut up to €1bn next year to cover the costs of the recalled vehicles.

To fix the issue in India, Volkswagen is planning to update the software carried in EA 189 engines after it gets the green signal from the ministry of heavy industries and testing agency, the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI).
