Global beverage can maker Rexam has joined the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) in a bid to develop a global standard for aluminum sustainability.
Rexam director of group sustainability John Revess said aluminum is one of the most sustainable materials available, with 75% of it ever produced still in use.
"Its light weight, high barrier properties and infinite recyclability make it ideal for beverage cans. Creating a sustainability standard for aluminium will demonstrate how the industry is addressing material stewardship and ensuring an ethical supply chain," Revess said.
According to the company, an agreed sustainability standard is expected to build confidence in aluminum as a sustainable material against a background where customers and consumers are interested to know more about the origin of the product they purchase.
