EU-Funded Project to Develop a New Monitoring Technology to Help Manufacturers

SMARTRIPE, a new EU-research project, is set to develop a new monitoring technology to help manufacturers improve efficiency and sustainability of cheese ripening processes.

The two-year project builds on the results of previous FP6 TRUEFOOD project on cheese ripening, and aims to make clear improvements in cheese ripening technology by implementing sequential ventilation procedures and a new monitoring concept in cheese ripening rooms.

It will provide cheese makers with a novel system, which will allow them to control ripening rooms, as well as access information about the status of the ripening room.

Funded by the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Commission, the project will join the efforts of 11 partners, including three research centers.

Partners include INRA-GMPA (France), NAGREF- DEMETER (Greece) and TEAGASC (Ireland); four technological SMEs: Constructions agro alimentaires et Pharmaceutiques (C2AP) (France), Bioval Process (France), Biosystems Engineering (Ireland) and IRIS (Spain) ; and four cheese manufacturing SMEs: Skarfi (Greece), Cooleeney (Ireland), Société Fromagère du Livradois (France) and Coopérative Fromagère de Planèze (France).
