Volkswagen and LG Electronics have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly develop a connected, cloud-based car service platform.
The two companies will start working together on Volkswagen's Cross-Over-Platform, which intends to improve vehicle connectivity.
The platform, which will utilize the latest cloud technology, will offer drivers digital access to features like smart home and location-based services.
Under the MOU, the companies will also focus on the development of a context-sensitive notification centre that can deliver messages in a safe manner and provide optimised recommendations to the driver in real time.
Volkwagen and LG will also work together on the development of next-generation infotainment technology for connected cars.
LG claims that it was one of the first electronic companies that committed itself to the automotive industry and it has been supplying audio-visual products since 2007.
In March 2015, Volkwagen's subsidiary Italdesign Guigiaro released its GEC concept car at the Geneva Motor Show. LG Electronics supplied seven key components for the concept car. These components include holographic display, connected smart watch, tail lights and rear camera.
At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this year, the partnership of the two companies showcased a technology that can control smart homes through connected vehicles.
Volkswagen electronics and vehicle research head Thomas Form said: "Volkswagen is pressing on with the digitalisation of its brands. Our focus in doing so is always on our customers.
"We look forward to working with LG and to developing in future simple, easy-to-use smart home solutions for our customers integrated into our vehicle systems."
LG cloud center head Richard Choi said "LG Electronics and Volkswagen are teaming up to develop the next generation of connected car platform that allows wide integration with smart home services and adoption of open IoT connectivity technologies.
"We think LG's expertise in smart technology together with Volkswagen's leadership in the automotive sector will revolutionise the way drivers interact with their vehicles."
