The Fire Started Last Wednesday at Smurfit Kappa's Recovered Fibre Yard in Nechells

The fire started last Wednesday (17 April) at Smurfit Kappa's recovered fibre yard in Nechells.

In a press statement published today (22 April), West Midlands Fire Service said: "Fire crews continued to work hard over the weekend and as of today (22 April) we still have four appliances and 20 fire fighters on site.

"An assessment will be made later today of the progress of the incident to identify when we can consider handing the site back?to Smurfit Kappa."

The fire service is still conducting investigations as to how the fire started.

A Smurfit Kappa spokeswoman told PN: "We are pleased to report that authority has just been granted by the UK Paper Division chief executive to recommence production at the Birmingham plant. "

Around 9,000 tonnes of recovered fibre were damaged in the fire and the mill was temporarily taken offline as a precautionary measure last week.

Smurfit Kappa reported that there was no damage to the mill due to its water curtain deployment and the wind direction.

Around 40,000 tonnes of paper and cardboard, from Birmingham residents, are taken to the SSK Paper Mill every year. This recovered paper and cardboard is then used by the mill as a raw material to make new packaging papers.
