Liu Zhenya Visits Helmholtz Association, TUB, Fraunhofer IPK

July 7-8, Germany --- Mr. Liu Zhenya, Chairman of Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO) talked with Professor Otmar Wiestler, Helmholtz Association's Acting President and Mr. Christian Thomsen, President of Berlin Institute of Technology (TUB). After talks with professors from TUB, he then visited Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and Fraunhofer IPK(Industrie 4.0) co-founded by Fraunhofer and TUB.

During these discussions, Mr. Liu Zhenya explained the what, why and how of GEI, and introduced UHV transmission R&D, its engineering application, and energy interconnection in China. He pointed out that GEI is able to solve the problems of resource constraints, environmental pollution and climate change as the inevitable way out to realize energy reform and its sustainable development. Since GEI is in line with the common interest of the mankind and provides huge potential for global energy development and technology innovation, he would like to strengthen cooperation with related parties to push GEI forward.

Professor Wiestler agreed that GEI, as a grant goal and concept, would bring tremendous change to future energy development. He said Helmholtz Association would like to strengthen cooperation with GEIDCO in technological R&D and think tank construction to promote GEI. Professor Wiestler also suggested to co-organize symposiums for experts in related areas. Both sides agreed to further strengthen cooperation and establish a regular communication mechanism. Dean of KIT and Directors of Helmholtz Association’s Public Relations, Knowledge & Technology Transfer, and Energy Technological Research  attended the meeting.

TUB President Christian Thomsen was impressed by the concept of GEI and what China has achieved so far after listening to the introductions. He expressed his full acknowledgement and support to GEI and looked forward to further exchanges and cooperation. He proposed to hold a large-scale GEI-related symposium in TUB and invited Chairman Liu to give a keynote speech.

The delegation led by Mr. Liu then held talks with professors from TUB. The visiting party got to know TUB's research on high-voltage transmission, power cables, renewables, and signal analysis and monitor. Both sides explored into how to promote GEI and reached a consensus. On the afternoon of July 8, the delegation visited Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology IPK cofounded by Fraunhofer and TUB. Institute CM Professor Kohl gave an introduction on Germany's Initiative‘Industrie 4.0’.

During their stay in Berlin, the delegation paid a visit to Mr. Shi Mingde, Chinese Ambassador to Germany. After listening to the report on the progress of this visit and GEI, he gave his high appraisal and support.

The Helmholtz Association is one of Europe's largest research institutes with 18 autonomous research centers and almost 40,000 staff. The annual scientific R&D fund amounts to 4 billion euros. It carries out top-class research in energy, earth and environment, health, aeronautics, space and transport, key technologies, and matter, endeavoring to solve major problems related to human society sustainability. The internationally renowned TUB is one of the largest universities of technology in Germany, with strong research capacity in optics, cybernetics, machine tools, and engineering design. It has close cooperative relations with many economic research institutes and large enterprises. Founded in 1949, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft focuses on application-oriented research. As the world's first industrial research institute, it initiated the research on smart production technology and equipment based on the Internet and. Its research covers natural & life sciences, including life sciences, optical and surface treatment, microelectronics, production technology, materials, and national defense & security.
