DU QUOIN--One of the state fair's main attractions has made some major,earth-friendly improvements.
Rides, lights, and booths operate for hours each day in the carnival midway. That equipment can use a lot of power.
However, one small and colorful change is cutting costs and saving energy.
"LED lighting is one of the greatest options out there,"said Freddy Miller with Miller Spectacular Shows.
The company outfitted the first ride with the improved lighting three years ago, seeing a 90%drop in power usage on that equipment.
This year, the company decided to go green on a few more attractions, including the 90-foot ferris wheel.
"Most people pull more power with a lamp on their night stand than what this ride pulls with all of its lights,"said Miller.
The switch has allowed the company to go from using seven generators for power to just four. The LED`s also give rides a new and exciting look.
"These lights create so many different patterns,"said Miller."So many different colors."
The LED bulbs are more durable. The carnival used to go through thousands of the old bulbs on the ferris wheel each year.Since March,Miller doesn`t think they`ve changed any.
The biggest reward, however,is seeing everyone from families to photographers enjoy the brighter view.
"Everywhere I go,people think when we turn these lights on,"said Miller."They think it`s a totally new ride."
