Alberta has given exemption from foreign land ownership rules to JBS, which makes it one step closer to buying XL Foods meat plant in Brooks, Alberta.
The XL Foods plant in Brooks Alberta was earlier closed due to the recall of its products for e coli contamination and began operations in October, reported the digitaljournal.com.
JBS was given the authority to manage the plant immediately after XL Foods began operations. Through a deal, JBS gained rights to purchase operations of XL Foods in Canada and US.
JBS USA Corporate Communications head Cameron Bruett was quoted by digitaljournal.com as saying that the company now has an opportunity to expand its business across North America and can also supply Canadian beef to across the world.
