Cascades Is Set to Introduce a Food Waste Bag

Canadian packaging company Cascades is set to launch a food waste bag, which consists of a double layer to prevent leakage. The paper bag, manufactured in Canada is made of 100% recycled fibers.

According to Cascades, the bag serves as an alternative to non-biodegradable plastic bag, has a 30lb capacity for wet leaves and can withstand 150lb of dry weight. It completes its collection of ecological household products, including yard waste bags which were released last September.

The company created the food waste bag as part of its efforts to promote composting and encourage people to adopt sustainable practice, in view of Quebec's waste materials management policy to recycle 60% of organic matter by 2015.

Instead of using bags made of virgin fibers, if every family in a small city of 10,000 homes uses two 100% recycled food waste bags, every week for a year, the cutting of more than 660 trees would be avoided, the company said.

Cascades produces, converts and markets packaging and tissue products that are composed mainly of recycled fibers.
