Suzuki Admits Discrepancies in Fuel Efficiency Tests in Japan

Suzuki has admitted identifying discrepancies in its vehicles' fuel economy and emissions tests in Japan.

The company said there has been no outright manipulation of information, and the difference in results was within an acceptable range.

In addition, the company said no products sold under the Suzuki name outside of Japan had been affected.

After the recent Mitsubishi fuel efficiency scandal, the Japanese government had ordered a widespread investigation into fuel economy and emissions claims by automakers and the industry methods used for measuring.

Mitsubishi Motors' President Tetsuro Aikawa resigned from his position and the scandal had affected the company's reputation to the extent that billions were wiped off of its market value.

In the latest development, Suzuki said that the variation in test methods took place because fuel efficiency and emission tests were undertaken inside a tunnel, which was against the protocol according to Japanese government.

Suzuki tried to justify this by saying that the test facility was located on top of a hill close to sea, which had some effects on the wind during the testing phase.

The company also said that as the tests results and its claims did not vary too much, there is no need for readjusting or revising its fuel economy ratings for the affected vehicles.

Some of the affected vehicles of Suzuki include Alto, Alto Lapin, Wagon R, Hustler, Spacia, Every, Carry, Jimmy, Solio, Ignis, Baleno, SX4 S-CROSS, Swift, Escudo and Jimmy Sierra.
