German carmaker Volkswagen has unveiled the new CrossBlue hybrid sport utility vehicle (SUV) concept at the ongoing North American International Auto Show being held in Detroit, US during 14-27 January 2013.
The new hybrid SUV concept is powered by plug-in hybrid powertrain that incorporates a TDI Clean Diesel engine and two electric motors, including 54hp front and 114hp rear electric motors, which will be mated to a DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission and an electric all-wheel-drive system.
The powertrain is aimed at generating a total combined output of 305hp and 516lb-ft of torque, as well as it can sprint from 0-60mph in 7.2 seconds, while achieving a top speed of 127mph.
According to the carmaker, the seven seated CrossBlue concept can be operated in zero emissions mode by either using a button or automatically, while the fully charged 9.8kWh lithium-ion battery allows the hybrid to travel a distance of 14miles in all-electric mode achieving a top speed of 75mph.
Features of the new model include a touchscreen that allows accessing the status of the hybrid system and a 3D display of either the navigation route or the contents of the media center, in addition to LED taillights and 12 airbags.
To be assembled at Volkswagen's Chattanooga manufacturing plant in Tennessee, the new all-wheel-drive CrossBlue will be positioned in between the carmaker's Tiguan and the Touareg lineup.
