To Reduce Energy Consumption and Carbon Footprint as Much as 22% in The Next Five Years

The Lincolnshire County Council has announced it will launch an ambitious plan to cut its energy costs and carbon footprint by as much as 22 per cent in the next five years.

New measures that are expected to be in place from next month could save the authority up to £7 million per year by the end of 2018.

The announcement comes as the council noted its energy costs jumped from £3 million to £10 million between 2007 and 2011 - and councillors are hopeful that the new Carbon Management Plan will provide the basis for sweeping energy cutting in the district.

Authority leaders have claimed that the savings will be made in a number of different areas from street lighting, to schools and offices.

Sustainability team leader at the council Doug Robinson told the Lincolnshire Echo that improving efficiency and lowering energy usage is a much better alternative to cutting frontline services.

Indeed, Mr Robinson explained that schools account for around two-thirds of the council's energy usage and will naturally be a focus of the scheme in the coming months.

Making the lights more energy efficient in schools is one of the main aims of the council - and installing ceiling spotlights is something that an increasing number of organisations have considered in recent times.

The lighting, while costing more to install, uses less energy and lasts much longer than traditional incandescents, meaning that savings are made on monthly bills in the long run.

Technical director at environmental consultancy Delta-Simons Roger Griffiths commented: "It's great that the county council realises the importance of reducing carbon emissions, not just from a financial perspective but to help create a healthier environment for us all."

Earlier this month, the Bath and North East Somerset Council announced that it will be following in the footsteps of a number of other local authorities by using LED street lighting as a way of saving money.
