Renault Unveils Obstacle Avoidance Feature for Autonomous Cars

Groupe Renault has debuted what it claims to be the world’s first in autonomous obstacle avoidance that matches professional test drivers.

Renault Open Innovation Lab, which is based in Silicon Valley, developed the new feature for autonomous vehicles.

The Renault Open Innovative Lab is part of the company network within the Renault Nissan Alliance and has been focused on improving safety and advanced autonomous driving technology.

The technology complements the company’s existing technology in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and vehicle safety and is expected to add to the company’s next stage of self-driving technology.

Renault expects that the new innovation can help it in leveraging its Alliance’s strength and can support the launch of more than 15 new models with different levels of autonomous driving capabilities by 2022.

Renault Open Innovation Lab – Silicon Valley director Simon Hougard said: “At Groupe Renault, we are focused on being an innovation leader in products, technology and design.

“Our innovation efforts aim at developing advanced autonomous driving technologies that consumers can trust will create a safer, more comfortable journey.”

Recently, Renault was part of the Rouen Normandy Autonomous Lab, a €11m project on experimental on-demand mobility service using autonomous electric vehicles on public roads. The project was taken up in Métropole Rouen Normandie, Normandy Region in France.

Other partners in the project include Métropole Rouen Normandie, Normandy Region, groupe Transdev, groupe Caisse des Dépôts and Groupe Matmut.
