In view of poor economic growth and increasing unemployment, the softwood division of the Timber Trade Federation forecasts that softwood lumber consumption in the UK in 2011 will fall by 4% against last year to 7.82m m³. This is published in the report by the TTF and the Forestry Commission of Edinburgh for this year's UNECE Timber Committee meeting. Consumption will probably rise slightly by 2% to 7.965m m³ in the coming year. This would represent growth of 6% against 2009 for which consumption amounted to 7.49m m³ of lumber. According to the latest forecast, only imports will be affected by the decreasing consumption this year, falling by roughly 8% to 4.83m m³. Growth of 3% to 4.97m m³ is anticipated for next year.
