Mike Lazaridis,the inventor of the Blackbery and co-founder of RIM,has put$100m into the Mike and Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre in Waterloo,Ontario,with the intention of re-creating the conditions at Bell Labs which made many of the fundamental breakthroughs in microelectronics technology.
Lazaridis founded the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in 2000,endowing it with$150m and,in 2005,gave$17m to the University of Waterloo to ards the Institute for Quantum Computing and the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology.
