Auralisation - designing with sound will be the theme of this year's Reproduced Sound conference, which takes place on 14-16 November at the Thistle Hotel, Brighton.
Paul Malpas, event chairman, said, "Having explored the role of the audio and electro acoustic specialist within the context of the project, we will spend time this year considering the opportunities that auralisation techniques offer to the task of representing sound in the design of buildings and systems.
"Whether the end product is a piece of technology or an architectural statement, we all know the importance of what we hear and how that contributes to the broader success of the project or product. However, it is our colleagues and clients who need to be convinced, and sometimes numbers just don't tell the right story.
"Following in the same year as the 4th International Symposium on Ambisonics and Spherical Acoustics, hosted in York by our friends at the Audio Engineering Society, the conference will give us the chance to explore the application of ambisonics and wave field synthesis (along with a number of more comprehensible technologies) to the task of sketching with sounds."
Organised by the Institute of Acoustics, Reproduced Sound is now in its 28th year and since its inception it has become renowned for bringing together some of the friendliest and most knowledgeable sound specialists in the world.
Highlights this year include a paper by world famous audio educator Pat Brown, president of SynAudCon, USA, who will deliver the Peter Barnett Memorial Award presentation on A practical merger of the measurement, listening and prediction processes, using B-Format Room Impulse Responses.
And in what promises to be a fascinating demonstration, Arup team members will show how the proposed HS2 London-Birmingham rail line will affect communities along the route by taking the project 'off paper and into your ears'.
Paul Malpas added, "Reproduced Sound conferences represent the cutting edge of modern audio and acoustics in an informal environment where attendees freely mingle and welcome the sharing of insight and information.
"Over the years they've become firmly established as a 'must attend' event for many people from a wide background in acoustics and audio sectors, from acoustic scientists to audio system designers, and from consulting engineers to venue operators, to name just a few, and this year's conference promises to be one of the best yet.
