The trend of using LED lighting products in place of conventional lamps in the Taiwan market is growing, and the penetration rate of LED lighting, and the proportion of total lighting products for LED lighting, is likely to increase to hit the milestone of 50% in 2013, earlier than the global average will do so in 2015 as forecast by Philips, according to president Edward Po for Philips Taiwan.

The penetration rate of LED lighting, bulbs and tubes, in terms of sales value in the Taiwan market rose from less than 5% in January 2012 to 30% in May, with an average of 20% for January-May, Po pointed out. In the period, mainstream LED lighting products were LED light bulbs to replace 40W incandescent bulbs and halogen lamps, Po indicated. However, LED light bulbs to replace 60W incandescent bulbs will become the mainstream of LED lighting beginning the second half of 2012, Po said.

Looking at the retail channel, Taiwan-based vendor Everlight Electronics has offered 8W LED light bulbs for sale at NT$299 (US$10.0) through cooperation with 7-Eleven chain while another vendor Delta Electronics has launched a 9W yellow-light and 10W omni-directional LED bulbs for sale at NT$399 and NT$499, respectively. In response, Philips has lowered the retail price for its 9W yellow-light LED bulbs from NT$599 originally to NT$499.
