General Motors is planning to invest $1bn in its Russian plants by next five years to expand its car and component production in the country.
The investment will be used to increase output capacity as well as in sourcing local components.
GM, which produces cars in Kaliningrad, St. Petersburg and Togliatti, has started the expansion of its St Petersburg plant in June 2012, where it aims to more than double production to 230,000 vehicles per year.
The expansion of the St Petersburg plant, which produces the Chevrolet Cruze sedan and the Opel Astra hatchback, will add production of the Astra sedan.
The production of Chevrolet Niva sport utility vehicle, which is built by GM in a joint venture with Russia's AvtoVaz, is expected to reach 120,000 units from 70,000 units, bringing total production of GM brands in Russia to 350,000 vehicles per year.
