The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is set to publish a final rule amending the regulations on food additives to no longer provide for the use of bisphenol A (BPA)-based epoxy resins as coatings in infant formula packaging.
Based on a determination of abandonment, the agency's action is not related to the safety of BPA and was the result of a food additive petition submitted by representative Edward Markey of Massachusetts.
Edward Markey asserted that the use of the chemical in the manufacture of infant formula packaging has been abandoned by the industry and requested that the agency amend the existing regulations.
As authorized in the food additive regulations, FDA's current safety review supports the safety of BPA for use in the manufacture of food contact articles.
