The ultra-efficient Peugeot 208 Hybrid FE will join a full stand from the French manufacturer at next month’s Geneva motor show.

A joint development between Peugeot and oil and gas giant Total, the Peugeot 208 Hybrid FE (standing for Fun and Efficient) will boast the ability to combine performance and efficiency, delivering a 0-100km/h time of 8.0 seconds and average CO2 emissions of 49 grams per kilometre, translating to fuel consumption of approximately 2.1 litres per 100km.

The Peugeot 208 Hybrid FE, based on the 50kW 1.0-litre VTi three-cylinder petrol-powered Peugeot 208 that launched in April last year, has received a series of enhancements to its drivetrain, aerodynamics and body to achieve the new figures that better the base car’s 14-second 0-100km/h time and 99g/km CO2 rating.

Tied to Peugeot’s Electronic Gearbox Control (EGC) automatic transmission, an electric motor and a battery taken directly from the French company’s endurance racing program, the three-cylinder engine gets a new special thermo-management and combustion cycle, reduced friction and reduced weight with lighter reciprocating gears and cylinder head.

Further weight reductions are expected to see a 200kg saving – the standard 208 was already up to 173kg lighter than the previous 207 – thanks to the use of composite materials and polycarbonates for body panels, windows and in the passenger compartment.

Also expected to make appearances on Peugeot’s motor show stand at Geneva from March 5 are the new Peugeot 2008 crossover, a hybrid version of the 2008 that will feature PSA Peugoeot Citrooen’s Hybrid Air compressed air technology, the Peugeot Onyx supercar concept seen at last year’s Paris motor show and the new Peugeot 208 GTi (pictured above), the latter due to join the rest of the 208 line-up in Australia in June.
