A £3 million indoor illumination attraction will open in Blackpool this April.
The 45,000 square foot Olympia Arena at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens is currently being transformed into a new attraction which will feature more than 35,000 luminaires. The Illuminasia attraction will be a blend of Chinese lanterns and LED technology. There will be six zones, with lanterns created from steel and angle iron frames and then covered with fabrics including silk, satin and vinyl.

The design and art direction has been carried out by Max Painter from Arcitectus, an interior architecture and event design and concept company. He worked with UK sculptor Leigh Dwyer on the concept.
“The Winter Gardens is an incredible Victorian building and we jumped at the chance to get involved,” said Painter. “Chinese lantern technology goes back thousands of years and this was a way of introducing Chinese culture to the UK.”
The area is formed into six different zones, including one called Land of the Giants (pictured) which has giant insects.
The installation is 100 per cent LED. “We have used a cool white throughout,” said Painter.
Jon Conway, on behalf of promoters ISA, said: “The arrival of Illuminasia in Blackpool brings significant private investment into the town and will take the town’s illuminations heritage to a new level. The attraction utilises what is already an amazing space in Blackpool’s Winter Gardens and transforms it into a sparkling wonderland never seen before in the UK.”
Illuminasia opens on April 18th and will be open throughout the year from 11am.
